Prof. Dr. Marzia Traverso is a distinguished environmental engineer and academic specializing in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and sustainability in the building and transport sectors. She earned her Ph.D. in Environmental Technical Physics from the University of Palermo. Since June 1, 2017, Prof. Traverso has been a full professor and head of the Institute of Sustainability in Civil Engineering at RWTH Aachen University. Prof. Traverso was a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at the Chair of Sustainable Engineering at Technische Universität Berlin, emphasizing Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment and Social LCA. She is an active member of various professional organizations, including the Steering Committee of the Social LC Alliance, and serves as a subject editor for the International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment. Her extensive research and professional activities have significantly advanced the integration of sustainability principles in civil engineering and related fields. In addition to her academic leadership, Prof. Traverso holds key advisory and coordination roles at the European and international levels. Since November 2022, she has been serving as Rectorate Representative for African Countries at RWTH Aachen University, promoting global partnerships in sustainability education and research. She is a valued member of the Advisory Boards of Otto Fuchs KG and Schüco International KG, offering strategic insights as the sole sustainability expert. Prof. Traverso is also the project manager and convener for the ISO 14075 development on Social Cycle Assessment, demonstrating her leadership in setting global standards. Her previous roles include Scientific Officer for Circular Economy at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in Seville (2016–2017), and sustainability expert at BMW’s Research and Innovation Center (2011–2016), where she led initiatives to embed LCA in automotive innovation. She also co-chaired a UNEP Working Group and contributed as rapporteur to the European Platform on Sustainable Finance (2020–2022), underlining her strong commitment to sustainable policy development. Author and co-author of over 80 scientific publications, Prof. Traverso contributes actively to journals such as the Journal of Cleaner Production and the International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment. She sits on editorial boards of leading journals in sustainability and waste management, and is widely respected for her scientific rigor and forward-thinking vision in the field of sustainable engineering.
