Jean Pierre Bergmann is University Professor and Head of the Production Technology Group at Technische Universität Ilmenau. His work focuses on production technology, welding and joining, laser materials processing, additive manufacturing, and digitalization in manufacturing. He graduated at Università di Ancona (now Università Politecnica delle Marche) in mechanical engineering, he received his doctorate in engineering from the University of Bayreuth in 2003, completed his habilitation in production technology at TU Ilmenau in 2008. He moved to a leading german company in automation of laser based processes for automotive application and was head of a profit centre there. He has been Professor of Production Technology at TU Ilmenau since 2010. His research activity is internationally recognized in more than 400 papers in journals and proceeding. He was general chair of "Laser in Manufacturing" in 2025 and several times subchair. He serves as a referee for different journals and is member of the editorial board of "Welding in the World" and "Journal of Advanced Joining Processes". Furthermore he is Chair of Subcommision IX-NF within the International Institute of Welding. He was member of the DFG review board 4.11 "production" between 2016 and 2024. He is reviewer for the German Science Foundation (DFG) and further german and european institutions. Prof. Jean Pierre Bergmann is member of the German Scientific Laser Society (WLT e.V.) as well as of the German Scientific Welding Society (WGF e.V.). Professor Jean Pierre Bergmann is an elected member of Saxon Academy of Sciences and Humanities to Lipsia and of the Germany National Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech).
